Social Media

An invitation to parents & concerned community members:
Teens and Technology
-inappropriate use and consequences-

Wednesday, May 6, 2015
6:30-7:30
Maple Lake High School auditorium

In this presentation, Karen Evans, will share her knowledge of the potential risks and dangers our youth are facing today because of social media and technology, including what is referred to as “sexting.”  A term used to describe the transmission of nude and semi-nude photos via cell phone. As a result of the ever changing world of technology, several unintended consequences have impacted students, schools, and the community.   Youth and adults are often unaware of the possible consequences if technology is used inappropriately.  Through a power point presentation that includes videos, case examples and statistics, attendees will have a clear understanding of the trends in social media and the seriousness of these issues.
Karen is currently serving as Restorative Justice Agent in Wright County Court Services. She is a trained mediator, facilitates victim offender and community conferences, and played an integral role in developing a diversion/conference procedure for juvenile sexting cases. Karen is also actively involved in public speaking. Karen has designed and facilitated presentations on Teens and Technology, Cyber bullying, and Sexting. She has been invited to speak at schools, for both students and parents, and at professional organization workshops.

Eight $25 door prizes will be
awarded to lucky participants!

8th grade computer contest needs your votes!!

Hi All,

This year my 8th grade computer technology classes created videos for a contest put on by the Minnesota Department of Health. The topic was the dangers of tanning. Maple Lake had three videos that were selected as finalist. Online public voting for 1st and 2nd place is this week (April 13-17). There are only 6 videos to choose between so our kids have a good chance. Please take a moment this week and cast a vote at http://www.health.state.mn.us/uvideo/.  Click here to open vote.

Finalists are:
MiSTEAKS of Tanning by Noah Zander and Dylan Neska
The Sunburn Nightmare by Brielle Paumen and Ava Mergan
The Tanning Adventures of Mr. Grape by Lily Workman and Samantha Price

Please share with everyone you know!!
Thanks,
Nicole

Reading tip of the week...

Make books special

Turn reading into something special. Take your kids to the library, help them get their own library card, read with them, and buy them books as gifts. Have a favorite place for books in your home or, even better, put books everywhere.

Cabbage Plant

Third grade families....today your child brought home a cabbage plant. Please plant this in a garden sooner than later. This is a contest to see which cabbage plant grows the biggest. Sometime this fall, take a picture of it and send it in to the contest provider. I will have more information to send home on Mon.  Happy growing!!!

Summer Academy

Families...
Just wanted to give you all a heads up about Summer Academy for this summer.

Summer academy is a four week program (this year it will be four weeks in a row starting June 8th and done ). The times are Mon-Wed 8AM-noon and Thursdays are a field trip 8AM-3PM (no Fridays). Students invited to Summer Academy are selected for continued learning in reading/writing and mathematics based on the assessments for report cards and Read Well by Third Grade data. An invitation will be sent home the end of April for the Summer Academy opportunity. This allows time for you to decide if the dates work and can commit for your child to attend 95% of the days. There are 36 slots for the K-3 program. Confirmation of acceptance is sent home early May along with a contact form and field trip permission slip.

If you would like your child to attend summer academy please let me know, otherwise, I may be calling you in a week or so. This is a great opportunity for students to have fun and keeping their minds growing for a little longer. Summer academy helps to prevent summer academic loss as well! You will need to provide transportation to and from school each day. Car pooling works well :)

Let me know if you might be interested and we can go over the criteria. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Harlan, Ms. Carlson, Ms. Hagen, or Mrs. Tongen.

Thank you!
Ms. Malwitz

Reading tip of the week...

Quick, quick

Use new words your child has learned in lively flash card or computer drills. Sometimes these help kids automatically recognize and read words, especially those that are used frequently.
