Marshmellow towers!!

Each team was given 20 spaghetti noodles, tape, string, ruler, and a marshmellow. Their goal was to build a freestanding tower, as tall as possible, without tipping over.  The tower had to hold the marshmellow on top!! This was a fun challenge for them....try it at home!!!

Wear Irish School Spirit

Families,
It is Homecoming this week in the High School. We will participate in a few of their activities. Monday dress in red, white, and blue; Thursday is class color~orange; and Friday wear Irish Spirit. NWEA is all done. I will go over the test scores with you at conferences. Next week starts our BOOK FAIR!! I will not send home an October book order this month. There are a lot of wonderful books to purchase at the book fair. My class will go on Wednesday to make their wish list. Oct. 13 or 14th will be our shopping day. The book fair will be open during conferences as well.  Next Tuesday, Oct. 11 is Late Start and National Hot Lunch Day. Our lunch schedule will change a little for that day. I will let you know when 3rd grade eats.
During our Daily 5 time, we have been working on Check for Understanding and Author's Purpose. In their book bag you will find a Parent Pipeline. This will give you some tips on how you can help at home as well. Math is finishing up Topic 2, Adding Whole Numbers. Be sure to work on math facts each day as well as read. There have been some change of destinations lately, please try and put a note in the planner so Ms. Malwitz doesn't go into panic mode and wonder if your child is home safely. I check the planner every morning when the kids get to the classroom, that way I will know what the plan is. Thank you for helping me with this!! Have a great week~ GO IRISH!!!

Families,
We took our first NWEA test (reading) on Friday!! The students did well!! This can be a long test and they all took their time and did their best. I will go over the results at conferences. Your conference slip will go home in the Wed. envelope. If the date and time selected does not work for you, please let me know asap so I can reschedule it for you. This Thursday night we are going to have game night. This is an opportunity for you and your family to come in and try out some new games and buy them to take home!!! Game night is sponsered by our PTA (PIE) group. Thank you PTA!! We have started four of our five pieces to Daily 5. Our focus will on Check for Understanding. In your child's book bag you will find a Parent Pipeline. This will be a great tool for you to use at home. Suggestions are given so you can help the same as they are taught in the classroom. Please be sure they practice math facts each night as well. Addition and subtraction for now. I hope soon they will be experts at those and we can move on to multiplication.
Have a great week and enjoy the variety of weather :)

NWEA Reading test

Dear Families,

Week three is here already!! The time is flying by~at least for me anyway. Our first spelling test went very well!! Pleaes be sure to practice these words each night. I only get 3 days to work on the spelling words with my class. Great first test!! This last week the third graders began their math switches. Please know that at anytime during the year they can go from any class to another. We just finished math assessments using the math curriculum we use in class to begin our groups with. Once NWEA is over, we will meet again and go over the math scores and make any changes as needed. If you feel your child is not in the best group, please let me know and we can set up a meeting to go over the test scores. As I mentioned before, I will go over math and reading scores at fall conferences. Next Monday is our volunteer training. If you plan on going on any field trips or help in any of the classrooms, please make sure you have this training and are up to date. We have Wellness Wednesday coming next week also. We wear comfy clothes to workout in after morning announcements. This will be on the last Wednesday of each month.

Picture Day
9:40

Dear Families,

We are off to a great start!!! The students are showing their Irish Expectations every day!! We will continue to work on these all throughout the year. You will notice on the weekly schedule I have both P.E. and Music listed. I split my class so that half will go with Ms. Carlson and the other half will go with Mrs. Kopff. The boys and girls are doing a great job remembering which class they go with!!! We are also going to start switching classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for Social Studies, Science, and Word Study/Spelling. We will begin math switching this week as well (using the Math Curriculum Assessments). After the NWEA test later in September, we will look at test scores and make any changes as needed. At conferences I will go over test results and answer any questions you may have at that time. If you have questions now, please call me or send a note. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have concerning anything here at MLE. I will always have a hard copy of my newsletter in your child's mailbox every Monday. The spelling list is printed on the back side as well. If you would like to receive my blog/newsletter by email, fill out the BLOG form and return it to school. I can sign you up using the email address you provided, or you can sign up on your own. Make sure you check your email for the feedburner confirmation email otherwise you are not completely signed up.

Welcome to a new school year and to my classroom!!!
